The Resurrection of Gavin Stone

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone Review

If you’ve seen inspirational movies before, you’ve seen this plot: Bad boy gets in trouble. Bad boy gets community service. Bad boy meets good girl. Good girl inspires bad boy. Bad boy has transformation. Everybody’s happy.

While The Resurrection of Gavin Stone follows this basic plot line, it manages to take viewers on a journey of surprise, delight, and entertainment along the way.

The film was both funny and cute, although I’m partial to lead Brett Dalton (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) so I don’t take much convincing.

Dalton plays Gavin Stone, an actor whose destructive lifestyle has forced him into community service in his hometown, a place he’d rather leave in the dust.

Tasked with janitorial duty, Stone negotiates his involvement with the Easter play—starring as Jesus—as a way to complete his community service instead. There’s just one hitch. Stone must be a professing Christian to take part.

How to be a Christian

From Googling “How to be a Christian,” Stone learns two tips: 1) Go to church and 2) Wear the costume. Watching Stone muddle his way through fitting into the classic Christian stereotype is hilarious, if not a bit revealing. Though at first he treats playing a Christian like any other role, the relationships Stone develops through the church teach him a lot about love, truth, and forgiveness. In the end he experiences a transformation where his old life stops making sense and he begins to understand what the Christian message really means. Stone is even able to face his past and reconcile with his father.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is a heartfelt look at the power of the Gospel to transform even the most unlikely person. It’s a study in contrast, temptation, and hope.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital HD!

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone synopsis

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone is an inspirational comedy rated PG about faith and forgiveness. Gavin Stone, a washed-up former child star is forced to do community service at a local mega-church and pretends to be Christian so he can land the part of Jesus in their annual Passion Play only to discover that the most important role of his life is far from Hollywood.

So I Love Charm Bracelets, Who Knew? [Ulinx Review & Giveaway]

If 2012 has been anything it’s the year of the charm bracelet.

I’ve never had one before, but by now most of my friends do.

In case you don’t know, a charm bracelet is just like a regular bracelet but customized. It’s filled with trinkets and pendants, which (usually) holds meaning for the wearer.

I think the appeal is because you can make it your own.

Recently I learned about Ulinx: magnetic charm jewelry. Up until this point I had only heard of the kind where you purchase the bracelet, then separately you purchase all kinds of charms to hang off of the bracelet.

Ulinx is a bit different. First you build your charm bracelet online using their fancy DIY bracelet builder. Then you choose the style you like, and drag in the pendants you want from their large selection. As you build the price grows or shrinks on the sidebar so there are no surprises when you’re ready to purchase.

I had a lot of fun building my dream bracelet. In fact I spent an entire weekend creating my personal masterpiece. Up until that moment I never thought I was interested in charm bracelets. Now, I’m kind of digging it.

The funnest part about the jewelry being magnetic is you can swap around your design all the time. And you can order extra charms or linking spheres so you can build more or larger pieces.

All in all, I’m a fan.

So I’m glad Ulinx is providing an awesome giveaway on arbynblog—$150 of Ulinx! I can tell you right now, that’s gonna be a nice Christmas surprise for the winner.

To enter all you have to do is browse the new Symbols Collection over at Ulinx and tell me your favourite pendant. You can tell me in the comments on this post, on Twitter, or however you generally talk to me. You can enter once and one winner will be chosen to receive $150 of Ulinx jewelry on Friday, December 21 so don’t put this off!

If I don’t know you remember to leave a way for me to contact you.

Thanks to Ulinx for this great contest and for the cool experience.

The River Rose [Book Review]

A month or so ago I received a review copy of The River Rose and, to be honest, the main reason I decided to read it was because when researching author Gilbert Morris I found him so intriguing my curiosity got the better of me.

Here’s why: Morris is prolific, to say the least. After writing his first novel at age 50 he’s gone on to write an average of one book per month…for a running total of 288.

So I not only signed on to read the book, but to participate in a blog tour as well.

And if you want to win a copy of The River Rose just leave a comment on this post telling me why you want to win. There’s one hitch, you need a US mailing address to enter. The winner will be chosen on July 13, 2012 by random.org and notified by email (so make sure you leave a way for me to contact you). The winner will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be chosen.

The reason I hesitated to take this project on is because I don’t indulge in a lot of inspirational historical romances. Because the ones I have read are cheesy. And was nervous this book would be cheesy. And then I wouldn’t know what to write about.

However, after asking around to (what I assume is) the target audience of this genre I learned there are many people who enjoy not only the subject matter but this author in particular. So I opted to press on. Maybe they were on to something.

We meet Jeanne in Memphis, at the turn of the 20th century. Over the past few years she’s had a rough go of things but a surprise inheritance—of half a steamboat—is about to change her life…in more ways than you expect!

That’s my blurb, just so you know. The book blurb goes on for a few more sentences (like 17) and tells you most of the plot. This makes the first 100 pages a bit redundant but once you actually get on the steamboat the story picks up.

Because the steamboat actually is the main setting, not Memphis. For me this is where the storyline became interesting as I’ve rarely read about steamboats and never considered how trading and export actually happened along the rivers before trains and planes and automobiles.

And guess what? It was a grand adventure! And it wasn’t too cheesy! And after swearing to my husband this book would NOT cause me to cry I found myself not only getting teary, but laughing out loud at a couple surprising plot twists.

Although predictable in some aspects (it is a romance) there were really enough logical surprises to hold my interest. I’m glad I read this book.

If you’re a writer you’ll understand how impressive it is to write one book in one month, so one book PER month is really amazing. However, if you’re a writer you’ll also be able to tell it was quickly written. There are some problems with head hopping and distracting and redundant adjectives. My advice would be to employ a really thorough editor, but what do I know. I’ve never written a book.

The River Rose: A Water Wheel Novel was released June 1, 2012 from B&H Publishing Group and is available in hardcover, in paperback, and for Kindle.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from B&H Publishing Group. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions on this blog (as always) are my own.
