No Time to Bury Them by Mark C. Eddy [book review]

No Time to Bury Them. What. Is. This. Book. About!?

This was the only thought I had when I read the pitch for Mark C. Eddy’s newest book, a fictional historical adventure set in post-gold rush Yukon, Canada.

No Time to Bury Them

No Time to Bury Them by Mark C. Eddy

While I love fiction I spend most of my time reading non-fiction. And when I choose fiction I’m on a plane and want something mindless and fun.

You know, chick lit or historical romance and what not.

So something with “bury” in the title and people with guns on the cover? Risky.

But I wanted to read a book about the Canadian north and I love all things gold rush. A few years ago I visited the Yukon and am looking forward to going again.

Reading through Eddy’s adventure tale snowshoeing between Fort MacCammon (not real) and Dawson City (real) I felt like I was travelling with the Mountie party.

Although it wasn’t the romantic, carefree journey I imagine my next visit to be. It was more like “holy crap who is shooting at me and why is there NO PLACE to hide!?”

Don’t get me wrong, I still want to visit again. But not in 1907. That place sounds like a death trap.

There were lots of cringy parts where if it was a movie I would have covered my eyes. I read those parts to my husband (you know, the ambushes, chase scenes, and gun battles) and he thought it had the right mix of violence and storytelling.

Since I usually skip those parts I don’t have much to compare to. In the end, I loved it. I cheered for Richard, our hero Mountie, and gained a greater respect for those brave enough to venture north in the pioneer days.

They were resilient people who participated in making the Yukon a wonderful, exciting (and much safer) place to visit today.

If you like historical fiction, law and order, braving impossible odds, and action-packed run-for-your-life-in-a-snowstorm adventures, please let me recommend No Time To Bury Them.

No Time To Bury Them Synopsis

The Yukon, 1907.

North America’s last untamed frontier. Dawson City has reached its tipping point. The citizens, and the people they count on to protect them, now live under the brutal control of Eric Morgan, a violent gang leader. Morgan’s power has only grown since the days of the Klondike Gold Rush, and he now prepares for his greatest score yet.

Dawson’s salvation rests with Inspector Richard Carol, who will lead a team of Mounties to liberate the city. But can he trust his own people? And with so many of his own battles to fight, can Richard trust himself?
