The Wonderful World of Men's Pairs Figure Skating

The wonderful world of men’s pairs figure skating

This is a guest post from the lovely Mama Tench.

When Robyn first put a call out for guest bloggers, I didn’t really give it much thought before I replied, “Sure, sign me up.” I mean my first choice for the month had been dumpster diving, but now, in retrospect, I’m very grateful that this month’s topic is cleaner in nature. Also, I’ve never written a blog, and didn’t even know what one was until Robyn took me to see Julie & Julia and as I prepare to graduate with a very formal Masters of Science (where the past two years of my life had to be written according to APA format), a fun writing assignment seemed like a great idea!! So here we go…

Despite growing up watching the majestic sport of figure skating with my British grandmother, I really don’t have much knowledge or direct experience with the sport. That was when I told Robyn that I would like to share my most recent exposure to the sport, the film Blades of Glory and entertain the notion of men’s pairs figure skating.

Here’s the story

Blades of Glory was released in 2007 and features an all start cast of: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Will Arnett, and Amy Poehler. Also featured in the film are cameos from many figure skating superstars, including: Nancy Kerrigan, Dorothy Hamill, Peggy Fleming, and Brian Boitano.

The film starts by introducing the two main characters, arch rivals in men’s skating, Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder). Following an on-ice fight, the two men are banned from individual figure skating. The two characters are soon reunited, following the long fall from the top of the sport, as they are recruited to create the first male-male pairs figure skating team.

Apparently, some perks that may come from men’s pairs skating are their increased strength, and the fact that both partners, at least in the film, are able to lift, hold and toss one another. This could be an intriguing idea. Think of a figure skating duo where both partners could trade off with lift and jump manoeuvres…there could be tremendous potential here.

In the film, the world wasn’t quite ready for something as progressive as same-sex skating, and perhaps in reality, this may be true; but for 93 minutes it is a unique and hilarious notion! Back to reality, in all fairness, I think that before men are allowed to compete in pairs, we should probably let the female ski jumpers have their moment in the spotlight.

Thinking back to British grandma and the larger world of figure skating spectators, she was a pretty progressive lady, but I don’t think she would go for men’s pairs figure skating. In grandma’s own words, it would be “pure rubbish.” The film would most likely end up in the same category, as grandma preferred her classy British humour to more crude American humour.
