Top Five First Fives | A Most Meta Top Five List

I’ve been writing top five lists for a long time so this is a roundup of my top five first fives from this blog. Hold on to your hats!

Top Five First Fives

Something I love about having the last six years documented in this blog is how much I forget.

For instance: I thought I started doing Top Five lists on this blog when I moved to England. But actually I began when I was in Quebec. Randomly. As was my entire stay in la belle province.

As I dug through my archives I thought I’d draw up a top five of my top fives.

Top Five First Fives

  1. Top Five Things That Make (Do Not Make) My Bug Bites Itchier
  2. Montreal Top Five
  3. England Top Five(s)
  4. Why I Don’t Want a Snuggie
  5. How to Give the Perfect Gift

My first attempts at top five lists were kind of funny. They consisted of a lot of inside jokes and no context, which was probably only funny to me and the one other person who was there (who probably didn’t even read my blog cause it was kind of a secret back then). I hope I’ve matured past that by now.

And, actually, although I think all those lists are pretty funny, I found another, which may take the cake. It’s about my first experience driving in England and me oh my that was a nail biter! Reading that list makes it seem like it was just yesterday I was driving on the left-hand side of the road, listening to my driving instructor tell me how nervous I made him because I was from Canada and claimed I could drive a manual transmission (I totally could).

Oh, and when you read Top Five Things to Know About Driving in England know that all these things actually happened to me on my FIRST driving lesson. Crazy! How did I spend two years there and never get in an accident?!

Top Five things to know about driving in England

  1. If there are stoplights the speed limit is 30 mph. If there aren’t stoplights the speed limit might still be 30, but it might be 60. But if it’s not 60 or 30 the speed limit could be 50. Or 40 mph. But if you don’t do it exactly right you will get a ticket
  2. A solid amber light means go. Or stop. A flashing amber light means go. Or stop
  3. Roundabouts jump out onto the road from nearby bushes. Beware. And drive to the left
  4. Firetrucks enjoy roundabouts. Generally, using lights and sirens, they’ll do laps around roundabouts the wrong way. Just because they can.
  5. Watch out for vicious garbage trucks. The UK seems to employ little garbage men who sit in the back and throw large items of trash at unsuspecting drivers

Consider yourself educated.
