Top Five Library Books I Recommend

This list is the top five library books I’ve borrowed in the past while since I am not in a place to collect books right now. Hope this helps you find something new to read!

Library Books

Sometime last year I re-activated my library card. Since I’ve spent many years travelling etc. I didn’t really have any reason to have a library card. But I still read. You see, I had worked out a system. I would purchase discounted or used books and read them. Then, I would trade them for new books from fellow travels, or leave them for others to read (if these others would have them).

But now I’m in one place and I can’t collect books. For one, I have nowhere to put them. For two, I enjoy turning over books. Looking at the same pile day after day, week after week is frankly boring. So while I whittle my pile of “to read” books down, I have vowed to not bring any new books into the house. At least no purchased books.

Which is why I reactivated my library card. To get library books.

Anyway, then the other week I mentioned how I had been avoiding writing Top Five Lists by browsing online for library books. And I requested a whole bunch. What started it all was the book Girl Crazy by Russell Smith and for the life of me I can’t remember why.

Probably I read an article I appreciated and then learned he authored this book. And probably he’s a Canadian author or something. That’s generally why I would request library books, or at least the beginning reason. So why would I request the following five afterward?

Top Five Library Books I Requested from the Library and Which Ones I Recommend

What No One Ever Tells You About Blogging and Podcasting: Real-Life Advice from 101 People Who Successfully Leverage the Power of the Blogosphere. I’m trying to think of why I would think this is interesting. Maybe it’s the secrets the title hints at—stuff no one EVER tells you! Why maybe it will just change my life!? Well, maybe it would! So I requested it. Yup. That’s really the only reason I can think of.

The IT Girl’s Guide to Blogging with Moxie. I doubt this book really drew me in by it’s title or by the bright pink cover. Or by telling me that “being a geek is oh-so chic.” Nope. I was more interested in reading about how these two girls could possibly make money off this kind of thing. I flipped through the book when I picked it up because it’s browser friendly and set up like a Dummies Guide book. You know, with the helpful sidebars and such. Anyway, I only looked through it once. It’s a bit condescending.

And, for the record, I felt the same about the book Julie and Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously. There is no way I requested this seriously. And I’m trying to recall why I would request it as a joke. Perhaps it’s because I don’t really believe that most people who blog can make a living off of it. Not completely. I do believe some can, but that it takes a lot of work. A lot of work. Now looking at the book a bit closer I think it’s funny the author’s last name is “rich.” Funny. Anyway, this book seems like a scam and I’m ready to read it. Also, I should note the author blurb says he has written for “national magazines” and “popular websites.”

Next on the list…

The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City. Being green is very trendy and very in but I have a hard time buying into the trend of just purchasing things because they tell me they’re “green” and “organic” and “eco” etc. etc. It’s such a buzz word, how do I really know things are processed organically and really antibiotic-free? How do I know? Anyway, that’s a bit of an aside because this book is more about deck gardening and making your own jam. I believe this is a very practical book for me at this point in my life.

Vogue Knitting on the Go! Felting. What can I say? This is a book about felting. I’m not very good at felting and I often like Vogue patterns so I thought I’d give it a shot. This is a cute little book with easy patterns and I think I will give it a shot or five.

So I guess a lot of these I’m not recommending but at least I gave you some recommendations. Right?
