I decided making slow cooker butter chicken would be an excellent use of my time. And you know what? It was! Sure I don’t know much about the different Indian spices but they’re sure tasty when they go together.

Slow Cooker Butter Chicken
I looked up a ton of recipes and it seemed each had it’s own special mixture of spices and flavours. Me having relatively no knowledge of Indian spices didn’t help the selection process. So, I once again went with an All Recipes recipe. They’re just so helpful with the comments and the instructions. Also since the recipes only seemed to vary in spice, I didn’t figure it mattered which one I went with (well, until I know the differences between spices that is).
The grocery store trip was pretty funny. Since I had no clue what to look for I just went to the aisle labelled “Ethnic Food.” I had all my main ingredients but needed the masala. The recipe called for two different kinds and no matter how hard I looked I couldn’t find the two I needed. There was lots of “masala” though. Random. So I thought I could either get creative or just purchase the package beside the masala—called Butter Chicken.
Honestly, I wasn’t up to the experiment of spice and I didn’t want to screw it up (my husband was watching!) so I took the easy way out this time.

I had a friend stay with me for a couple weeks and she had left me something called Glico curry and some long grain brown rice to use if I wanted so I decided to use that curry in place of the called for powder and paste. This type of curry is actually Japanese, not Indian, and it’s sweeter, milder, and thicker than typical Indian curry.
The whole cooking process went really well. The recipe turned out delicious and I would make it again in a heartbeat. I had a lot of the ingredients already from other cooking projects but nothing is weird and you can find it easily at your local grocery store. Except for the masala. Why can’t I find it? I think I’ll try a different store next time. One with a bigger Ethnic food section.

Nicely done, I wouldn’t have thought of that in a slow cooker. Granted, we have fully moved to butter chicken sauce in a can and it’s so easy but still delicious (though likely very unauthentic)
Yeah it was a lot of work to prep it on the stove and then move it into the slow cooker… but super tasty! Glad the jar variety works too (I can see myself moving that direction lol)
there are recipes for this that don’t require any stove top cooking. just a food processor or pureed tomato. they do require between 5-8 hours in the slow cooker though
i just found a recipe i am going to try. it looks like the simplest version i’ve seen so far. all goes straight in the slow cooker… no other prep required! find it here (cut & paste this into the address bar)
